  1. va is not a word. It is an abbreviation. When clicking on the definition, one might think for a moment that the "volt-amperes" definition is more normal, but it is not. No physicists speaks of how many "va's". It is strictly an abbreviation. Scrabble web sites also do not list va as a word. "pH" is the other stupid one that the quiddler site accidentally accepts. That's a symbol, like "Fe" is a symbol for iron and "Au" for gold.

  2. The rules that came with my new quiddler set specify as allowable words anything in your chosen dictionary except....list follows. But the list does not specify symbols, eg atomic. So we accept eg sn the symbol for tin. Why should this not be allowed?
